Twelfth Night

William Shakespeare

Like many of Shakespeare’s comedies, this one centres on mistaken identity. The story begins with Viola, who is shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria and believes her twin brother, Sebastian, is dead. Disguising herself as a young page named Cesario, she finds employment with Duke Orsino, who is in love with the mourning Lady Olivia. To win Olivia’s heart, Orsino sends Cesario as a messenger, but the twist unfolds as Olivia falls for Viola, not knowing she is a woman, while Viola is in love with the Duke, who also sees her as a trusted confidant.

The acclaimed performance features Siobhan McKenna and Paul Schofield, bringing to life not only the central plot but also a humorous subplot involving the pompous steward Malvolio. As characters conspire to convince Malvolio that Olivia is enamored with him, chaos ensues, highlighted by the antics of Sir Toby Belch and Sir Andrew Aguecheek.
