King Lear (ARKANGEL)
William Shakespeare
This shattering drama of isolation and loss is one of the greatest tragedies in world literature. In this audiobook adaptation of King Lear, the aging monarch of Britain, Lear, has three daughters: the hard-hearted Goneril and Regan, and the good and gentle Cordelia. Lear’s tragic lack of judgment leads him to decide to divide his kingdom based on which daughter can profess her love for him in the grandest terms. This decision is mirrored by the loyal Gloucester, who is misled into rejecting his virtuous son Edgar in favor of the villainous Edmund.
The performances in this adaptation are noteworthy, featuring Trevor Peacock as Lear, Clive Merrison as Gloucester, Penny Downie as Goneril, Samantha Bond as Regan, and Julia Ford as Cordelia. David Tennant plays Edgar, Gerard Murphy takes on the role of Edmund, and John Rogan voices the Fool.
